Brick Laying Procedure

Step-by-step installation guide for perfect brick application

Step-by-Step Laying Guide

Follow these 6 steps for a professional, long-lasting brick installation on any wall surface.

Step 1

Surface Preparation

Clean the wall surface thoroughly, removing all dust, loose particles, and debris. Dampen the surface with water for better adhesion. Ensure the wall is structurally sound and free from cracks before beginning the installation.

Step 2

Mortar / Adhesive Mixing

Mix cement mortar in a 1:4 ratio (cement to sand) or use a ready-made brick adhesive. The consistency should be a thick paste that holds its shape. Prepare only the amount you can use within 30 minutes to prevent the mix from drying out.

Step 3

Marking & Layout

Mark horizontal and vertical guidelines on the wall using a spirit level and chalk line. Start from the bottom and plan your layout upwards. This ensures straight lines, uniform spacing, and a professional finish.

Step 4

Brick Application

Apply mortar or adhesive to the back of each brick using a notched trowel. Press the brick firmly onto the wall following the guide lines. Use spacers to maintain consistent joint gaps between bricks.

Step 5

Joint Filling

Fill the gaps between bricks with pointing mortar using a pointing tool or grout bag. Ensure neat, consistent joints throughout. Remove any excess mortar before it dries for a clean, professional appearance.

Step 6

Cleaning & Curing

Clean excess mortar from the brick surface with a damp sponge. Allow 24-48 hours of curing time before exposing the wall to weather or applying any sealant. Avoid disturbing the bricks during the curing period.

Do's & Don'ts

Follow these best practices for a long-lasting, professional brick installation.

Do's

  • Dampen bricks before use to improve bonding with mortar
  • Use consistent mortar thickness (8-10mm) for uniform joints
  • Check alignment with a spirit level after every few rows
  • Allow proper curing time of 24-48 hours before exposing to weather

Don'ts

  • Don't use dry bricks as they absorb moisture from mortar too quickly
  • Don't apply too much mortar as it can cause uneven surfaces and waste
  • Don't rush the curing process or expose to heavy rain within 48 hours
  • Don't ignore expansion joints for large wall surfaces to prevent cracking
